What is electric underfloor heating?

How does electric underfloor heating actually work? When is it suitable and how safe is it? Here we list some things that are important to keep in mind when choosing an underfloor heating system for your particular home.

This is how it works

Ebeco's underfloor heating is based on direct-acting electricity via a heating cable that usually covers the entire free floor area. A thin layer of screed is spread over the underfloor heating cables to obtain an even surface and the floor is laid on this. In some cases, the heating cable is cast into concrete. Insulation board is always laid under the heating cable for an energy-efficient system. The temperature is controlled room by room with a thermostat on the wall.

An electric underfloor heating system is a complete heating system. No supplementary heat sources are needed in rooms where it is installed. Electric underfloor heating is especially suitable for renovations and extensions. It is a relatively fast and cheap installation compared to many other heating systems that require major intervention.

Electric or water-borne underfloor heating?

Ebeco's underfloor heating system is thus based on direct-acting electric-borne heating, but there is also water-borne underfloor heating. A common question is which system to choose: one with electric cables or one with water pipes? This depends of course on conditions in your home and the requirements for the underfloor heating installation. Bear this in mind when deciding which will suit you best.

Low construction height

In the event of low building height requirements, electric underfloor heating is a good alternative. Compared with water-borne underfloor heating, the construction height is very low, which is often a big advantage when renovating. Our underfloor heating cable has a construction height of just 4 mm and 3.5 to 6.5 mm foil, with insulation.

Comfortable floors all year round

Electric underfloor heating is the perfect choice when you want a flexible heating system. Other heating systems are often shut down in summer. This means, for example, that floors in bathrooms and other rooms can often be cold in the summer months.

With electric underfloor heating, you can choose which floors to have warm and dry all year. It is also possible to add electric underfloor heating above a water-borne underfloor heating system in rooms like bathrooms and halls. Then you can simply switch to electric heating in the summer months.

Reliability

After more than 40 years experience in the market, Ebeco's cables are of a robust design that makes them very durable. In the unlikely event of a heating cable failure there is very good equipment for tracking the fault. It can be found from above the floor surface, so that only individual tiles for example need to be lifted for repair.

And the only thing that can happen to a system that fails is that it stops being warm. There is no risk of water leaks or other damage to the property. And it is important to us that you feel secure about underfloor heating from Ebeco. We therefore provide a 12 year guarantee, with the possibility of extending it to 25 years.

What does electric underfloor heating cost?

Investment costs for electric underfloor heating are relatively low compared to a water-borne system. There are many different kinds of water-borne systems and operating costs vary a great deal between them. Some systems have low operating costs, but take a long time to recoup the investment cost. This especially applies to small areas such as bathrooms and halls.

Exactly how much it costs to install electric underfloor heating obviously depends on how large the room is, what output you want and what other requirements you have for the underfloor heating installation. You will get the best answer to the question by asking your nearest Ebeco dealer. The installer's work must also be included in the price.

Operating costs

Electric underfloor heating is an effective source of heating. Efficiency is high and carbon dioxide emissions low. Electric underfloor heating is installed near the surface, which makes for a fast-acting system because the air in the room is soon heated. With a fast system and good control, you can make better use of external heat supplements, such as solar radiation and other electrical equipment in the home.

A fast system with optimal control is an energy efficient system. With our Energy Saver products, you have the optimum fast system that is only used when actually needed. Combined with a green electricity agreement, you have a clean heat source with minimal environmental impact.

Benefits of underfloor heating

With electric underfloor heating, you get a heat source that distributes the heat efficiently. It is warmest at floor level and a few degrees cooler at head height, just as we humans like it.

Compared to radiators, underfloor heating is not visible and you can furnish completely freely without having to worry about obstructing your heat source. In addition, a better indoor environment is achieved thanks to fewer swirling dust particles, which is especially important for allergy sufferers. Dry floors also do not provide a breeding ground for the growth of mites and other allergenic organisms.

Underfloor heating dries floors quickly, which is a practical benefit for halls and bathrooms.

Who can install electric underfloor heating?

Electric underfloor heating is a high-voltage installation that must be laid and connected by an authorised installer, according to Elsäkerhetsverket (the Swedish Electrical Safety Board). You may purchase the underfloor heating yourself as a private individual, but the installation must be carried out by an approved installer.
